Please ULTRAMARINE BOATBUILDERS PVT. LTD Builders of fine wood-epoxy yachts Custom or semi-custom The yard, settled in South India, managed by French sailor and builder wants to offer the discerning yachtman, an alternative to mass production boats, to build boats for individuals. Most sailors dream of the ideal boat, on their own specifications. Many of them will buy a production one, just because custom boats are not affordable anymore. Ultramarine gives you the possibility to have your own boat built for less price than a production one. BUILDING MATERIALS A good boat must have good performance under sail, must be fast and easily handled. Therefore, she should not be heavy. Maintenance must be minimal : why spend your time tinkering instead of cruising the seven seas ? So much water, so little time ! A boat is costly . It is normal to expect her to be very strong, very safe, very durable. Materials to build good boats must have excellent strength to weight ratioand a good resistance to fatigue. They must last long while requiring low maintenanceWOOD-EPOXY HAS ALL THOSE QUALITIES There are three major building processes : PLYWOOD : A good material for boats.Ply sheets, coated with a layer of fiberglass and epoxy resin will give strong homogeneous structures. But the shapes are limited to hard chine hulls. This material is best used for planning hulls such as speed boats or dinghies. sheets are used with excellent results for decks and bulkheads on any type of boats. Plywood STRIP PLANKING Narrow battens of red cedar are shaped on templates bulkheads. No need for or nails. All battens are glued together with epoxy then glassed both sides and (with one or two coats of epoxy-compatible fibre). A hull built in strip planking is very stable and has very good impact resistance . COLD MOLDED Three or four diagonal veneers of Red cedar or mahogany are glued on stringers and bulkheads. For larger hulls , a composite of strip planking with two diagonal veneers is a good choice. It will give light and very strong hulls. - Wood-epoxy (strip planking or cold molded) is the best material to build light stiff and It is suited to any size as well as any style of design : traditional, classic as well as very beautiful hulls which will be totally watertight forever - modern The Company Ultramarine Boatbuilders Pvt. Ltd. is a French managed joint venture between European and Indian shareholders. The company is established in Pondicherry, on the south-east coast of India. The place has a hot and reasonably dry climate, and is fairly protected from the south-west monsoon that beats down the rest of India every summer. The manager, Lionel Mallard, started sailing in 1965 and started building boats in 1975. During 20 years, he shared his time between these two activities. He has been cruising single handed as well as crewed, coastal and offshore. In 1992, he left France with his family for 5-year circumnavigation aboard his own schooner. He feels his experience as a sailor is essential to advise customers, and solve all problems a boat builder has to face to complete the best boat. For the four last years, he is settled in India where he builds the boats he loves. The team : 15 highly skilled carpenters and painters who have been carefully, taught the technique of wood-epoxy the perfection of the finishing and the requirements of the international market. Why India? The Southern coast of India has a long maritime tradition. For centuries, they have been building the huge teak dows that used to carry goods all across Indian Ocean, along the Spice road, and to Far east, along the silk road Indian carpenters have really surprising ability , and are quite willing to learn new techniques. All necessary materials are available for wood-epoxy construction; all high-tech equipment can easily be imported. Last argument and not the least: raw materials and labour are available at a very reasonable cost. Our goals We want to build for our clients the exact boat they hope, the boat which seems to meet the best of their requirements, according to their program, budget and aesthetic choice. We want to build fast , comfortable, well-balanced, seakindly boats rather than floating caravans. We want to build boats that are stiff and strong, well insulated, durable, fatigue-and-shock resistant, and need little maintenance. All qualities that have appeared as being essential during our long sailing experience 1/What interest can I get in having my boat built in India ?2/Isn't it risky to have my boat built in a foreign country?3/Is India a reliable country?4/How will my boat be delivered to my country?5/Can I get a ready-to-sail boat and sail her myself from India? 6/Can I be sure about the quality of the high-tech products? 7/What about taxes and import duties? 8/How can I be assured that my boat will be built with utmost care? 9/The boat of my dreams is not in your catalogue 1/What interest can I get in having my boat built in India ? A boat built in India will be much cheaper that a boat built in your country. Approximately one third of the price if the building technique is labour-intensive ( mainly classic designs like Merry-Dream , Pointus or J class ) Approximately 40% cheaper for modern boats which require more sophisticated high-tech products ( Turbo 1100 or Cactus for example ) Generally speaking, you can get from us a one-off built boat at a cheaper rate than you would get a production boat in your country. 2/Isn't it risky to have my boat built in a foreign country? Our Company is registered in India as a Private Limited Co. with foreign equity shares , duly authorised by the Reserve Bank of India . An international agreement will be signed by the two parties at the beginning of the construction, including proprietorship clause: at any moment of the construction, the boat is the property of the boat owner pro rata the payment already done. Payment terms are either an irrevocable letter of credit or part transfers on the company bank account. 3/Is India a reliable country? With one billion inhabitants, India is the largest democracy in the world since its independence in 1947. The country is politically stable, with no constitutionnal crisis in the last 50 years. Major foreign corporations have production units , investments and/or representations in India. This is a reason why we have decided to chose India to settle our business and float a Franco-Indian company there.4/How will my boat be delivered to my country? Most boats we build are shipped out of the country. There are two possibilities according to the size : - small boat will be sent in containers - large boats will be shipped inside or on deck of a steamer In both cases, we deal with reliable shippers and shipping lines and can give you the quotation on how much the freight will cost. 5/Can I get a ready-to-sail boat and sail her myself from India? Yes, we have sailed in and out of India several times on our own schooner. Your boat can be completed here. Electronics, ropes, security items, can be imported and set up here. Pondicherry is only 8 days sailing from Thailand, 3 days from Sri Lanka, on the way to South Africa or Red Sea. 6/Can I be sure about the quality of the high-tech products? We can find in India the best raw materials. South India is well known for its timber wealth ( Red Cedar, Mahogany, Teak, ) First quality stainless steel - 316 L - is available. For epoxy resins and paints, we use foreign brands, produced in India under foreign licence (Araldite, MRF, ) In case of a finished boat, we'll import all high-tech products from the best companies : Lewmar, Wichard, Harken, for the equipment Vetus, Yanmar or Volvo for the engine For modern boats we import Sparcraft masts and riggings. Your boat will have the same equipment as if she was built in your country. 7/What about taxes and import duties? Every country has different laws and regulations; so you will have to ask your local custom agent about that. 8/How can I be assured that my boat will be built with utmost care? Ultramarine Boatbuilders Pvt. Ltd. is managed by Lionel Mallard, an experienced boatbuilder and sailor himself. For several years, he has been teaching his team of carpenters how to build wood-epoxy boats and reach the highest standard of quality. He only employs highly skilled workers and has full time attendance on the yard. All products are controlled by him during the construction and finishing process. Moreover, the customer can ask building survey from Lloyds or Veritas who have representations in India. 9/The boat of my dreams is not in your catalogue No wonder! We don't sell boats, we build Your Boat. That means we don't consider boats as products for customers. Our goal is to produce yachts for individuals: "the owner's yacht". This flexibility is quite possible in our company, and is made quite easy when we use wood-epoxy as a material. If you already have a precise idea of the specifications of your boat, if you know a designer and have chosen a plan, we'll be able to send you an estimate. If you are not sure about the boat required for your program, we'll be able to advise you and guide you to the designer who will be the most able to draw the boat of your dreams or already has her in his stock plans.
